A mallet is a bit like a drill press – you never quite understand why anyone but a machinist has one, until you actually need to use one.
While you will not use a mallet as much as a knife or ax, there are situations when having one is a game changer and that is where this project, in a pinch, is perfect!
Lugging around a mallet on a camping trip or even a bug-out event is not optimal, given how much you will not use it – it's clunky, heavy and having it beat against your leg, slung from a belt, would get old, very quickly.
Using your ax or even a larger survival knife, however, you can build your own mallet, on site, with just a block of wood.
