The key to survival is being able to improvise.
As every survivalist knows, re-purposing or modifying stuff to meet your immediate needs can mean the difference between being comfortable or not, being able to complete vital survival tasks and even in some cases between life and death.
One way to to improvise is to make your own tools, using tools you already have.
In this case, an ax is used to fashion a mallet that would be great for driving in tent stakes, making kindling or any other function that you need a broader, blunter hammering head.
Being able to make a mallet like this would save valuable space and weight, particularly if you were in a survival situation or even just camping.
In the video on the next page, we show you how to use an ax to make a mallet!
