You may look at this title and think that this topic is going to be about how to discreetly carry switchblades, a pocket pistol, and brass knuckles.
While these weapons are excellent for defense (though their legality varies in each state), the topic we discuss focuses on a different kind of “low profile” weapon altogether.
In a world of mass hysteria over the potential threats of the “assault rifle,” which the media and people who don't understand firearms have now named public enemy number one, a low profile weapon today is a firearm that isn't noticeable by most people.
So to be underneath the radar and be a “gray man” it's important to have a weapon that won't draw a lot of attention.
To find out what you can do to keep yourself on the down-low and armed simultaneously, check out some relevant information after the break.

Good article!
That is a given.
Used to have an sks, lost it in a fire, I want another one but they’re getting hard to find in my area
When you can go into the woods and make a Native American style Bow and arrows you will never have to worry about ammo. Yes there wonderful to have but in the long run well Bow & arrows are older than the bible think of that.
Chris Bloodworth or by the 1000’s
Everybody in my neck of the woods has an AR-15 and a 9mm 40 s and w or 45 acp a .22 lr and a 12 ga and a ramdom deer rifle. Bottom line is the only center fire rifle rounds you can count on everybody having is .223/5.56
Ben Kozar yeah I have both an AR and a Kalashnikov, and I have well over a thousand rounds stored up for each, but for my 30-30 I have about 60 and I have around a hundred for my 308. Now Dennis Cary it probably would be easy to certain popular hunting cartridges like 30-30, 30-06, and 308. But there is still larger quantities of the military surplus ammo. Example at the sporting goods store near me they sell 556 and 30-30 but the 30-30 is only sold in 20 round boxes for about 20-25 dollars a box. The 556 is sold in 120-150 boxes for 40-50 dollars. But when SHTF we won’t be going to the sporting goods store or the gun stores cause they’ll be hectic with people who want to get a gun so in the event of a collapse all the ammo we would acquire would be from scavenging and when you’re going through someone’s abandoned home or some other structure you’re more likely to come across 556, 223, 7.62, 9mm, and 45 because those are the most popular cartridges across the county not only because they’re affordable today, but again they are sold in larger quantities than the typical deer cartridges and the 357 and .38.
You have to look at the complete supply and demand of the firearm market to figure out the best SHTF guns. What are the most popular weapons and the round their chambered for.
The rounds you will be able to find in homes are going to be the exact rounds that we couldn’t find stocked on shelves two years ago.
As with many things it would depend on personal preference and a plan that takes into account your abilities and the are you will be in. As for myself i tend towards things that don’t look or seem “tactical” and with the way the government has been heading i must admit to a certain degree of concern purchasing and “stockpiling” ammunition that is associated with tactical weapons. But i freely admit i am a bit paranoid.
Ben Kozar it’s $20 in Florida, and where I am the deer cartridges like 30-30 only hit the shelves around late July and earlier August. But they have the 9mm, .40, .45, 556, and 7.62×39 year round. That’s at the sporting goods store though. So that’s another thing too when it comes to the availability of ammo.
That sucks we have all the NATO rounds plus 380 38 357 45 cap 45 LC 44mag 12 16 20 410 gauge 223 243 30/30 30/06 300 win mag 7mm win mag 22/250 .308 hunting rounds 270 in stock all the time
And .40 s and w
Moron site! Skills are far more important. I am also a trapper, you really don’t want to come near me without permission!! I can sleep while I kill. Depending on firearms alone is a losers game. Mix them, save the resources that are harder to come by.
Last I checked 7.62×39 was the most produced round in the world.
A Mosin with a good scope works quite well
Spencer
AK 47 rounds are most common in world. Besides Russia mass production most countries have this as weapon of choice for armies, so if world wide it would be helpful, but since it’s not Americas weapon not too helpful here lol
I’ll keep my 30-30 till I die.
Chris Browning BLR takedown .308 with Aimpoint PRO

I can go to the local Walmart right now and buy a 1000 round case of .223, all that other stuff not so much. Not to mention so many people own an AR and most of them buys lots of bulk ammo. The reason for hunting calibers is hunting and you don’t do a whole lot of shooting for hunting. Maybe a 50 round box for sighting in and a little bit of practice, then another 50 round box for the hunting season, and maybe one extra for just in case. So hunting rounds ain’t really “stocked up”. One of the main reasons people buy AR’s is for a SHTF situation and for personal protection, so they buy lots of ammo for practicing and for stocking up on. So in all actuality there will be much more 5.56/.223 than other standard hunting calibers.
Ill hang on to my AR if its the same to you haha.
Ever woodmaster I ever had broke down, couldn’t handle a lot of rounds through them
Try killing a deer with homemade bow. That’s why there were no FAT Indians
This is how you write an article when you know nothing about what you are writing about.
Done it not as hard as you think and the no FAT Indians is because sugar, trans fat and very fatty meat is not part of there diet.
Grammar. Worry about that first. Most of you won’t make it ten feet anyway.
Yea but marines use a m-16 iron site which are pretty technical, at least compared to most lever guns
Suppressed 22 xD if shtf a suppressed 22 would never be worth the care
Tho a solid wooden stock to bash$#%&!@*that an AR cannot
Ok big daddy knock ur self out
Actually you want a 12 guage shotgun. Most universal gun made. Ammo is cheap . can shoot bird shot to a slugs.
i have my guns knives and crossbow with a lot of homemade bolts/arrows
I tell myself that when I stare my scout rifle which is what Jeff Cooper was referring to when he said that haha
Wow. Seriously?
All this talk about rapid fire and how many rounds you can get off per unit of time.
When I go hunting, I only aim to use one bullet per targeted animal.
The same applies to urban setting when SHTF. While everyone around you is making noise and not aiming, cool yourself down, aim carefully and squeeze off a well placed round. Just one will do (unless a zombie then double tap) and in the heat of things, you can stay out of sight, hidden, and unnoticed while eliminating threats discreetly.
If you go out like Rambo firing everything you have as fast as you can, in the long term your gun will be as useful as an iron pipe. Save your ammo, if you think you’ll raid an abandoned home for ammo, think again. You’ll be fighting off hordes of people thinking the exact same thing.
To survive when SHTF, keep to yourself, keep quiet, stay out of sight, stay alert, don’t draw attention to yourself, and most importantly, help when you can: form strong communal bonds for food, medicine, allocated skills etc. remember that your neighbor is not your enemy.
For gray man purposes, an SKS. Otherwise I’ll stick to my AR or AK.
Keith Anderson. what are your thoughts on that?
A suppressed 22 could do a lot.
Go ahead, spend thousands on that fancy assault style rifle, or that super high tech pistol. A bullet from a cheap, Romanian copy 38 special kills you just as dead.
I’ll keep my AK thanks if I absolutely have to be low profile I’ll use a 12 gauge pump shotgun.
I wouldn’t want to use a rifle that I have to worry about not working when it’s dirty. It’s a good survival gun but a .22 is for sure not a good defensive rifle at all. Especially if you are shooting at any kind of distance.
Very good choice for what this article describes.
The standard for determining a deadly wound. Is a 3/4 ” pine board. It has already been proven that a .22 LR can inflict a deadly wound at 440 yards, with penetration through a 3/4 ” pine board. Despite the rampant disrespect fir this round, I would not like to be on the recieving end and find out I underestimated it…
Cause there is loads of .303 lying around lol.
Here’s a benign little pop gun that wouldn’t hurt a fly. Horrible, evil, killer assault weapons? Look elsewhere. This one is nice and friendly. Tee-hee!
The gun store I go to most of the type stocks it
Dont overlook the .22lr
Enfields can be re-barreled into .308, which I think is a much better caliber choice.
A good arrow is hard to make, and they CAN break easily. You WILL have to worry about ammo with a bow. I agree the people should have a good bow and set of arrows, though.
