
When you look at a map of cell phone service, as broad as coverage is now, there are still huge swaths of the country that have little or no coverage.
In a survival situation, that can not only mean you are isolated from help, it also can mean that your cell phone is constantly looking for a connection and your battery is draining.
Once it drains completely, you really are on your own.
Fortunately, in many remote places, while you cannot get a good cell coverage, you can still get a wifi connection or at least enough cell coverage to send a text!
In many cases, if you have wifi, even a weak connection, you have enough to get in touch with the outside world!

Relying on a cell phone – for what use whatsoever – shows that one hasn’t given it much thought.
Playing lottery of having a signal or not is not an option. Always carry a handheld device like HAM for instance.
How am I going to be in range of a wifi access point in the middle of nowhere?
Short wave radio makes more sense. If I don’t have cell service how the hell am I gonna have wifi?!
