On of the most speculated SHTF scenarios involves an Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP.)

An EMP is a short burst discharge of electro-magnetic energy, either intentionally or naturally occurring and if it is large enough, it could wreak havoc on electronics and even the very electrical grid.

In fact, US Congressional hearings concluded that an EMP, either naturally or man made, is a major national security vulnerability, given the age and state of our electrical grid.
