When put in a SHTF situation it can be difficult deciding on what type of shelter you should construct. The kind of shelter you need mostly depends on the building materials, tools, and conditions you're faced with.
In addition to figuring out what type of shelter to build, you should also consider whether it's even safe enough to go looking for materials before constructing your shelter. Who knows — dangerous people who are seeking materials (and want to steal yours) may be in your midst.
Taking the weather and climate is also important. Ask yourself if a mud hut will keep you safe from the rain? The answer is probably not. Also, will you be wasting time looking for some grass that'll thatch your roof when you're dealing with snow?
Asking yourself vital questions will help you decide on the shelter you need to build. Of course building a shelter involves improvising, but if you know your shelters ahead of time, then you'll have an idea as to what type of shelter will keep you the dryest and safest.
One of the most important tools you can have is knowledge. If you know your options in advance based on the climate and surroundings, then everything should fall into place.
