While this certainly is true, it is also overkill for the sake of an easily recognized symbol.

The reality is most pathogens die much sooner in heated water than the 202 degrees Fahrenheit needed to make water boil.

“Boiling” is just an easy benchmark that virtually everyone recognizes!

But not every survival situation will allow for a full boil of water – in fact, some containers you could store water will disintegrate if you get anywhere near boiling.

Others can release harmful chemicals into the water once heated past a certain point.
