There are three different types of people who fill out the “survival preparedness” equation.
The first person is a hardcore survivalist who is getting ready for a long-term survival situation that will alter life as we know it.
The second type of person is preparing for an occasional and temporary inconvenience that's usually caused by weather.
In the middle of that is most of us — the people who prepare for a longer-than-a-few-days situation, but do not have a year's worth of food and water stored away.
These groups tend to “cross stream” in regards to survival items everyone should have on hand if faced with a serious situation they're getting ready for.
The items that people should stockpile include dry and canned goods that other stockpiled foods that are important to get beforehand. Otherwise, they will quickly run out in most food markets during a real SHTF situation.

What are the recommendations for folks living in more tropical climes? Most recommendations and survival food sources always gear towards root cellar conditions and much cooler/moderate temperatures for long term storage.
