(Video) Here’s How to Open a Can With a Metal Spoon. It’s Easier Than I Thought!

opening a can

The principle behind this hack is pretty straightforward and simple: Harder metal can bend and penetrate softer metal.

The metal used in food storage cans is made of less robust metal than the steel used to make most eating utensils.

By using this principle and applying pressure to the softer metal, you can use a spoon or any other utensil if it is strong enough to crease the food can, penetrate it and eventually peel an opening large enough to get at the contents.

While ideally, you have a can opener to do the dirty work, in a survival situation or even a scenario where you forgot to pack a can opener on a wilderness fishing trip (not saying that has ever happened, FYI), this method of opening a can of food can mean the difference between dinner or not!

Check out the next page to see how it is done.

Buy a p38 and keep in your kit! Weighs almost nothing, opens almost anything.

While I’m here, do people really sit around and say, damn I’m hungry but I can’t open this can?

My first thought was pop a little hole with a knife then work the spoon around to open. Didn’t expect anything this complicated. Sheesh.

Buy 3 or 4 p38 and put one on your key chain, one in your kit, one in the truck and give one to your wife. You can’t have to many.

Much easier to rub it on top of a flat rock. Top pops right off once the rim is worn down.

I’m sorry I’m using a p38, rock, knife or hatchet. The spoon would be my very last resort lol!
