If you had very limited supplies, would you be able to survive? A good follow-up question to that would be what constitutes “limited supplies?” Today that could mean a few weeks worth of prepared food (freeze dried) and enough water for a gallon a day per person. Back in the time of the Civil War, though, very limited supplies would have been almost nothing to us today.

In a time when everything was made from scratch, and every soldier had to prepare his own food at every meal, utilizing meager rations that would be looked at with fearful disbelief today, the ability to become creative with the rations you got would be a very necessary survival skill.
