How to Collect Pine Nuts in the Wild and Why They’re One of the Top Survival Foods

pine nuts

Not only good for making pesto, but pine nuts have also been a highly sought-after source of high-quality nutrition for thousands of years.

Although often difficult to gather, they are rich in protein and healthy fats, making them an excellent survival food to add to your stores. What makes them particularly good is the fact that you can add them to virtually any dish to make it more energy-dense.

Unfortunately, with pine nuts being one of the more expensive food sources, very few people actually turn to this great option. Little do they know that, with access to the right trees, they can learn how to gather and prepare the pine cones for nut extraction themselves.

This not only significantly lessens the impact on your wallet, but it also improves your self-sufficiency through following tricks the Native Americans would have used to increase their own food stores for the winter. You can learn more on the next page.

They probably are still using those tricks. At least, I know Pomo in my area still harvest acorns, seaweed, madrone berries, and other foods from around here. You introduce this like Native Americans are a people of the past. They aren’t.
    Happy Indigenous Peoples Day.
