3 Animals That May Do More Harm Than Good if a Person Were to Eat Them in the Wild

Not all animal meats are equal. It's easy to assume that most or all animals have similar nutrition values and provide the same level of sustenance, but that mindset is a mistake.

Most of us eat beef. pork, chicken, and fish on a regular basis but we rarely think about the nutritional content we consume. Sure we're mindful on the number of calories or fat content we consume, but that's it.

When we buy our food from a supermarket or we hunt for fun, we often take it for granted that we're getting something good. That mindset may be fine in everyday life, but it won't work in survival situations.

Some meats are better than others and we're about to show you 3 animals you may want to reconsider if you're looking for food in the wild.

What animals should you avoid in survival situations? For one, you should avoid super lean meats. You would need to eat far more calories in a survival situation and the animals on the following pages cannot provide enough calories to sustain life.

Take a look at this post to find out more about the 3 animals you should avoid eating in the wild.

Rabbit are a seassonal harvest. Usually during winter and spring they can be packed with parasites. Just check what you eat nerds.

they keep repeating the same stupid article Yeah, its a bad diet…thats why my grandparents are dead.Or because they would be over 100 years old

Rabbit, squirrel and panfish/trout. Due to being low in calories. Your welcome. I saved you multiple clicks and bullshit ads.

So it would be better to starve than eat these because they don’t provide enough calories. I’ll take me chances.

I’ve read elsewhere it’s because its too lean, no fat. Rabbit fever I seem to recall. It’s okay to eat but not as your only food source for weeks or months on end.

This article is pretty wrong though. Panfish are stupid and take near 0 energy to catch (anything that flashes/wriggles+hook). Then all you need is some fatty acids from other sources. Hell, use the panfish innards to bait catfish.

After about 4 or 5 days without food, that little bunny would start to look like a porterhouse steak.

    How stupid.
You can survive on these animals if you have to.
    People have lived on less.

One shouldn’t eat strictly one food source anyway..that much should be obvious. Thanks!

Panfish guts can be used to catch a number of things. Rodents turtles all kinds of good eats.

This is only in the US. Most places dont have rabbit fever. We used to eat them on our farm.

The writer is an idiot. Maybe they should go look up the definition of the term survival. You eat what ever you can catch. Stupid.

Except that all three cans be caught while you’re doing other things.

Cook your squirrels and rabbits in a pan not a grill you need to eat every drip of fat or oil don’t let it drip in the fire

Josh, I don’t have to. Rabbit starvation (aka protein poisoning) is from eating lean meats and only lean meats. In other words, you can literally get it from any hunted animal. Did you know that it’s also called Mal De Caribou? Literally, Caribou Sickness. And also fat starvation. I looked up the last two since they weren’t included in my research when I started considering trapping or raising rabbits. So as I said, there’s no good reason to avoid them. A viable food source is a viable food source. What would have been far more helpful is if they had given ways to combat protein poisoning while keeping yourself alive. Instead of basically saying ‘here are some of the plentiful food sources you can find, why you should avoid them, and a first class ticket to despair in a survival situation!’

Rabbit fever is from ticks. Rabbit poisoning is from eating nothing but lean meats. Hence it’s other name, fat starvation. Also, my original source for rabbit information is actually a UK based website talking about Warreners dying because they were only eating rabbit meat with no fat source. So no, it’s not just in the US. It’s not just rabbits either. It’s any hunted animal.

Rabbits will be rare when SHTF. There is plenty of plants and animals out there year round that can be eaten. It’s not exactly going to be Red Lobster or Texas Roadhouse, but it will stop bellies from growling…
