.22 Long Rifle – One Survivalist’s Argument as to Why This is the Ultimate SHTF Weapon

.22 rifle

Firearms are an important part of any survivalist's calculations in all but the minor survival situations.

They can be used for hunting, self-defense, and bartering and in many cases can mean the difference between eating meat or not and in extreme cases, making it through or not.

Having a reliable and accurate firearm is very important, especially if you are facing a prolonged survival situation.

What is the best firearm to have, though?

You have a lot of options, but one of the most reliable is a .22 Long Rifle.

While prices vary, from very inexpensive to very expensive, there are a few constants why the .22 is the best bet for your survival needs.

To see why, check out the list on the next page.

Something about Bolt action rifles that really are truly amazing. Long lasting and extremely reliable.

Ammo is cheap and most 22 lr are extremely accurate
Perfect for small game and in a pinch self defense.

    Grass is green.
    Turtles arent very fast runners..
Oh wait you confused me. I thought we were just naming useless off topic facts.

If only it was still possible to find sub sonic rounds. You probably don’t even know.

I can put 3 rounds inside of a quarter at 100 yds…yeah they are pretty dead on accurate

Jeff Burchiel subs are still available, might be a little hard to find in some places. I can buy them in Fairbanks, AK

A high quality break barrel AIR-RIFLE. Most small game will outlast any big game. And it’s quiet. You can hunt an entire area and no-one knows your their. Lois and Clark walked across the country eating game hunting with a .30 cal air pump rifle. Pressing there own lead balls along the way.

P.s it’s not a debate, I’m only saying add a .22 break barrel to your arsenal…it will find d a place in survival mode.

Patrick White Actually, you can load sub-sonic 223 ammo that has more energy and is quieter than most 22 ammo….or you can make half$#%&!@*comments…..either way you know what they say about opinions…..

Ever tried these? Only about 500 fps but they will drop a squirrel in its tracks. No gun powder in them, just the primer.

  11. Rick Thompson said:

Dont forget the old pump 22s, mine is plenty accurate for small game. Mix that with some primer only 22 rounds and nobody knows you are there.

I love my 22’s but 400 yards? Really? In a survival situation? Get real

  13. Mike Long said:

you could get a 12 gauge break action and get a .22lr rifled insert. or just a combo break action like the m6 scout or x caliber. more options

  14. Joshua A. Kruth said:

I agree, shooting something 400 yds away…especially if u don’t want to be heard or seen, with wind…bad idea. That’s why I’m dead on at 100 yds.

  15. Dustin Dailey said:

I prefer underlever. Same concept but since your barrel doesn’t move it’s more accurate

  16. Patrick White said:

Not a half$#%&!@*comment. The sound isnt the only benefit. In fact one of the primary benefits is the sheer amount you can carry. So you can half$#%&!@*your way on out of here with your ammo that weighs twice as much that youve designed to perform the same task. Good job bro.

Crossbow/longbow, pump air rifle, .22, and .22 mag will kill anything breathing from zero out to 250 yards. Depends on what you’re shooting at and where you hit it.

For SHTF there are many possible scenarios and variables. I wouldn’t be quick to discount a .22 for most of them that I can think of. You can carry/hide thousands of rounds in a very small space (and lightweight) and it’s cheap to accumulate. If you have to scavenge, it’s probably the most plentiful round in this country to find.
In a guerrilla/E&E scenario, remember that you don’t always have to kill to put an enemy combatant out of the fight. Maybe more because you are tying up other resources for them to evac a casualty.
No, it wouldn’t be my ONLY weapon, but I would definitely have one on hand. Just my two cents.
